Cheating Mom

My name is Tracy, and this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to share. My cheating mom is secretly seeing another man, and the worst part is—she’s not even hiding it from me.

Everything started a day after I completed JHS. My father had a terrible accident and lost one of his legs. Since then, he has been using crutches and struggling with mobility. Before the accident, my parents didn’t have the best relationship, but they somehow managed to make it work. They weren’t the laughing, joking kind of couple. Dad was always straightforward, while Mom mostly kept to herself.

Whenever they had a fight, I became their messenger. Dad would say, “Go and ask your mother where she put my trousers,” and Mom would reply, “Tell your dad I don’t wear his trousers with him.”

I once found my mom crying alone in a corner. Dad wasn’t around, so I wondered what could have made her that sad. Through her tears, she said, “I’m tired… I’m growing old because of overthinking. If not for you, I would have left long ago.” It wasn’t the first time she had said this to me.

Despite everything, I loved both of them. They tried their best until Dad’s accident changed everything. He lost his job, and although his company promised to find him a suitable position, that never happened. Since then, Mom has been the breadwinner. The little stipend Dad receives isn’t even enough to buy his medication, leaving Mom to carry the entire family’s burden.

When my school results came out, I did very well. I should’ve been happy, but fear gripped me—would Mom be able to afford my school fees? Somehow, she managed to send me to school, and I’ve been there until now, almost completing my education.

In my second year, Mom visited me with a man named Mr. Incoom. She introduced him as someone who lived nearby and could deliver things to me whenever she couldn’t come herself. The man smiled and said, “She looks exactly like you.” Mom laughed softly and replied, “I took my time to weave her in my womb.” For the first time in years, I saw my mother truly laugh. It made me happy to see her smile again.

Mr. Incoom started visiting often, sometimes alone, sometimes with Mom. He brought me food and money, saying, “Study hard. If you do well, it will be easier for your mom to push you further.” At home, however, Mom rarely mentioned Dad. Whenever I asked about him, she’d say in a dismissive tone, “Your father? He’s just there.”

One afternoon, while out with friends, I saw my cheating mom entering a shop with Mr. Incoom. It wasn’t during her usual visit days, and something felt off. I wanted to confront her but didn’t want to explain why I was out, so I stayed hidden.

The next day, I called Dad and casually asked where Mom was. He said, “She went to her hometown for a funeral and will return Sunday.” That’s when it hit me—she wasn’t at a funeral. She was with Mr. Incoom.

When they visited me next, Mom looked completely different—bright, glowing, even wearing makeup for the first time in years. She seemed happier than ever. According to Dad, she didn’t return home until Monday morning.

I felt betrayed. My father, who needed her the most, was alone while my cheating mom was with another man. It consumed my thoughts, affecting my studies and even my health. I worried that by the time I finished school, I might return to a broken home.

Finally, I gathered courage to ask her, “Is he your boyfriend?” She laughed nervously and tried to dodge the question, saying, “Why do you think like that? I hope you’re not having a boyfriend yourself.” But I knew the truth.

Now, I’m torn. Should I tell my dad and risk shattering him completely? Or should I confront my cheating mom and beg her to stop, to focus on her husband who’s suffering silently? My heart aches every day as I watch my family drift further apart.

This is my story—a story of love, sacrifice, and the silent pain of discovering that your own mother is a cheating mom.
